Bright Angel Trail to Indian Garden is the classic Grand Canyon below-the-rim day hike and one of the most iconic trail experiences in the entire National Park System. This route follows an ancient Native American path that descends through 1.5 billion years of exposed geological history, passing through layer after layer of colorful rock formations before reaching a shaded oasis on the Tonto Platform, 3,060 feet below the rim.
The trail begins just west of Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon Village and is one of only two maintained corridor trails on the South Rim. Unlike the South Kaibab, the Bright Angel offers seasonal water stations and resthouses along the way, making it the safer and more forgiving route for longer below-the-rim excursions. The first rest house appears at 1.
5 miles, and the second at 3 miles. Both provide shade, emergency phones, and seasonal drinking water. The trail drops through the Kaibab Limestone, Toroweap Formation, Coconino Sandstone, and Hermit Shale in succession.
Each rock layer tells a different chapter of Earth's story, from ancient seas to vast sand dune deserts to tropical swamps. Interpretive signs at the rest houses explain the geology in accessible terms. For anyone with an interest in earth science, this trail is a walking classroom.
Indian Garden itself is a stunning desert oasis where Garden Creek supports a grove of massive Fremont cottonwoods. The shade and year-round water here have made this a vital resting point for canyon travelers for thousands of years. Picnic tables, restrooms, and a water spigot are available.
The campground requires a backcountry permit for overnight stays. From Indian Garden, a 1.5-mile spur trail leads to Plateau Point, which offers a dramatic view straight down to the Colorado River.
Adding this out-and-back extends your total distance to over 12 miles with additional elevation change and should only be attempted by fit, well-prepared hikers. The single most important thing to understand about this hike is the difficulty of the return climb. Gaining 3,060 feet over 4.
6 miles in the thin, dry air of the inner canyon is exhausting even for strong hikers. Allow at least twice as long for the ascent as the descent. Bring a minimum of four liters of water per person, salty snacks to replace electrolytes, and high-calorie food.
Hyponatremia, caused by drinking too much water without adequate salt intake, is a real danger here. Start at dawn during warmer months and avoid this hike entirely if temperatures at the rim exceed 80 degrees, as inner canyon temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees hotter.
