About Brown's Ranch Trail

Brown's Ranch Trail offers access to the northern reaches of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, one of the largest urban preserves in the United States. This trail provides a fantastic desert hiking experience with a distinctly different character from the more popular southern trailheads. The landscape here is wilder, the crowds are thinner, and the sense of being in genuine open desert is palpable.

The Brown's Ranch Trailhead is located at the northern edge of Scottsdale, and reaching it gives you a sense of just how far the desert extends beyond the city limits. The trailhead has a paved parking lot, restrooms, and water fountains. It serves as a major hub for both hikers and mountain bikers, and the preserve does an excellent job of managing multi-use trails to minimize conflicts between the two groups.

From the trailhead, the Brown's Ranch Trail heads south into the preserve through rolling desert terrain. The landscape is classic upper Sonoran Desert at its finest. Dense stands of saguaros fill the hillsides, many of them with multiple arms and impressive stature.

Palo verde and ironwood trees provide scattered shade, and the ground is covered with jojoba, creosote, and various cacti. In years with good winter rain, the wildflower displays along this trail can be extraordinary. The trail surface is primarily decomposed granite and packed dirt, with some rocky sections as you gain elevation.

The grade is gentle enough to maintain conversation while walking but provides enough ups and downs to feel like a real hike. The 450 feet of total elevation gain is spread out over the distance, so you never feel like you are grinding up a steep slope. One of the trail's strengths is its connectivity.

Brown's Ranch serves as a starting point for numerous loop options and through-routes in the preserve. You can combine it with the Cholla Mountain Loop, Granite Mountain Loop, or continue south toward the Gateway area for much longer adventures. This makes it an excellent base for hikers who like to vary their routes and explore new territory on repeat visits.

The northern preserve area tends to attract more mountain bikers than the southern trailheads, so be aware of cyclists on shared sections. The preserve has a yield system where bikers yield to hikers and everyone yields to equestrians. In practice, most cyclists are courteous and announce their approach.

Wildlife sightings are common along this trail. Javelina herds move through the area regularly, and you may spot mule deer in the early morning hours. The diverse bird population includes Gambel's quail, cactus wrens, curve-billed thrashers, and during spring migration, a variety of warblers and flycatchers.

Parking is rarely an issue at Brown's Ranch, even on weekends. The lot is large and the trail system disperses visitors quickly. This is a great option for anyone staying in north Scottsdale or the Carefree and Cave Creek areas who wants quality desert hiking without the drive to more distant trailheads.
