About Piestewa Peak Summit Trail (Trail 300)

Piestewa Peak is the go-to summit hike for serious Phoenix fitness enthusiasts, and for good reason. At just over a mile each way with nearly 1,200 feet of elevation gain, this trail packs a tremendous vertical punch into a short distance. Many local runners and hikers use this as their daily training ground, and you will see people charging up and down at impressive speeds on any given morning.

The trail begins from the large parking area inside the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Even with its generous lot, parking fills up fast on weekends and holidays. From the trailhead, you follow a paved path briefly before hitting the dirt and beginning the ascent.

The first section is relatively moderate as the trail switchbacks through desert scrub, passing chollas, creosote bushes, and the occasional hedgehog cactus in bloom during spring. About a third of the way up, the trail transforms into what feels like a giant outdoor staircase. Large rock steps, some natural and some placed by trail crews, create a stair-climbing experience that is relentless.

Your quads will feel every single step. The trail is well-defined and there is little route-finding required, which is a nice contrast to the scrambling required on Camelback. However, do not mistake "well-defined" for "easy.

" The grade is steep and sustained, and the rock steps can be uneven and hard on the knees, especially coming down. Roughly two-thirds of the way up, you round a bend and get your first clear look at the summit block. From here the views open up significantly, with downtown Phoenix visible to the south and the sprawling north Valley stretching toward the horizon.

The final push involves some hand-over-rock sections but nothing as technical as Camelback. The summit of Piestewa Peak sits at 2,610 feet and offers a wide, flat area where you can sit, rest, and soak in the views. On clear days the panorama extends from the Superstition Mountains in the east to the White Tank Mountains in the west.

The Sierra Estrella range is visible to the southwest, and if conditions are right, you can see the snow-capped San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff to the north. Local wisdom: arrive by 6 AM on weekends between October and April. Weekday mornings are more manageable but still busy.

Bring trekking poles if your knees are a concern because the descent is where most people struggle. The rock steps are hard on joints, and a slip on the way down is the most common way hikers get hurt here. There is no shade on this trail, so sunscreen and a hat are non-negotiable.

If you want a slightly less crowded alternative in the same park, try the Freedom Trail loop at the base, which offers gentler terrain with nice scenery.
