About Wasson Peak via King Canyon

Wasson Peak is the highest point in the Tucson Mountains and the premier summit hike in the western district of Saguaro National Park. The King Canyon route is the most direct way to the top and rewards hikers with an incredible journey through one of the densest saguaro forests on the planet. From the moment you leave the trailhead, you are surrounded by thousands of these iconic cacti, many of them towering 30 to 40 feet tall with dozens of arms.

The trail begins on the King Canyon Trail, which follows an old mining road into a narrow rocky canyon. The first mile is relatively gentle and shaded by canyon walls in the morning hours. You will pass the remains of an old copper mine and several interesting rock formations before the trail begins to climb more steeply.

At the junction with the Sweetwater Trail, bear left and continue uphill toward the ridgeline. The middle portion of the hike traverses open hillsides covered with a staggering density of saguaros, barrel cactus, and ocotillo. In spring, after a wet winter, this section explodes with wildflowers.

Mexican gold poppies, lupine, and brittlebush carpet the slopes in brilliant yellows and purples, creating a display that rivals anything you will find in the state. Timing a visit for late March during a good wildflower year is a special experience. The final push to the 4,687-foot summit involves moderate scrambling on rocky terrain.

The 360-degree panorama from the top is phenomenal. You can see downtown Tucson to the east, the Santa Catalinas to the north, Kitt Peak Observatory to the southwest, and Baboquivari Peak far to the south on the Tohono O'odham Nation. On exceptionally clear days, you can make out mountains in Mexico.

Bring binoculars for the full experience. Wind can be strong at the summit, so carry a light jacket even on warm days. The descent back down King Canyon is straightforward, though the rocky sections demand attention on tired legs.

Trekking poles help significantly on the downhill. Water is nonexistent on this trail, so carry at least three liters per person. The park entrance fee is $15 for a single vehicle or $25 for a weekly pass, and it also covers entry to the eastern Rincon Mountain District.

Restrooms and a visitor center are located near the park entrance. Start early to secure parking and to enjoy cooler morning temperatures on the exposed ridgeline sections.
