Airport Mesa Loop Trail is Sedona's premier sunset hike and one of the best viewpoint trails in all of red rock country. Circling the mesa that serves as the foundation for the Sedona Airport, this trail provides continuously changing panoramic views of virtually every major red rock formation in the area. It is also one of the few popular Sedona trails that does not require a Red Rock Pass, making it especially accessible for visitors.
The trailhead is located along Airport Road, which climbs steeply from the junction with Highway 89A to the airport at the top of the mesa. A small parking pullout near the beginning of the trail holds maybe 10 cars, and additional parking is available at a larger overlook area further up the road. The lower trailhead parking fills quickly at sunset, so arrive at least 45 minutes before sundown if an evening hike is your plan.
From the lower trailhead, the loop heads south along the western edge of the mesa. Almost immediately, you are treated to sweeping views of west Sedona and the formations beyond. The trail traverses a narrow ridgeline with views dropping away on both sides.
To the west, the distant Mingus Mountain and the Verde Valley are visible. To the south and east, the iconic profiles of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and the distinctive monoliths of Sedona's central corridor line the horizon. The trail surface is a mix of red rock slickrock, packed dirt, and some rocky sections.
The "easy to moderate" rating reflects a few short scrambles over rock ledges and some narrow sections along the ridge. None of it is technical, but it does require attention, especially if you are distracted by the views, which you will be constantly. Airport Mesa is one of Sedona's four main vortex sites, and the energy here is said to be an "upflow" vortex associated with expansion and clarity.
Whether or not you are drawn to the spiritual aspect, the physical setting is undeniably powerful. Sitting on the red rock at the edge of the mesa with 360-degree views of one of the most beautiful landscapes in America is an experience that affects people on a fundamental level. The loop continues around the eastern side of the mesa, where the views shift to include the towering walls of Wilson Mountain, the northern canyon country, and the distant rim of Oak Creek Canyon.
The full loop brings you back to the trailhead with a comprehensive visual tour of the Sedona area. Sunset is the prime time for this trail, and for good reason. As the sun drops toward the western horizon, the red rock formations ignite with color.
The light shifts through shades of gold, orange, red, and finally deep crimson as the sun disappears. Cathedral Rock is particularly stunning in this light, and photographers line the overlooks with tripods to capture the display. Practical notes: bring a headlamp or flashlight if you plan to watch the full sunset, as you will be hiking back in the dark.
The trail has some drop-offs that are not clearly visible in low light. Dogs on leash are welcome. Water and sun protection are necessary for daytime hikes.
This is one trail where the experience changes dramatically based on the time of day, so consider visiting both in the morning and at sunset if your schedule allows.
