About Soldier Pass Trail and Seven Sacred Pools

Soldier Pass Trail packs an impressive collection of geological features into a single hike, making it one of Sedona's most interesting and varied trails. Within the first mile alone, you encounter the Seven Sacred Pools, a natural sinkhole called Devil's Kitchen, and sweeping views of red rock formations. The rest of the trail continues through beautiful terrain that rewards continued exploration.

Access to this trail requires some advance planning. The Soldier Pass Trailhead has only about 12 parking spaces, and the Forest Service requires a special parking permit for this location in addition to the standard Red Rock Pass. The permit system helps manage the impact on this popular area.

You can also access the trail from the Jordan Trailhead nearby, which has more parking but adds distance to the hike. Check current permit requirements with the Coconino National Forest, as the system has evolved over recent years. From the Soldier Pass Trailhead, the trail heads north through juniper woodland into red rock terrain.

Within the first quarter mile, a short spur leads to the Seven Sacred Pools, a series of natural depressions carved into the red sandstone that collect rainwater. After significant rainfall, these pools fill with water and create a beautiful scene of reflective pools against the red rock. During dry periods, the pools may be empty or hold only small amounts of water.

The pools are a fragile geological feature, so stay on the trail and do not walk in them. Continuing on the main trail, you soon reach a viewpoint overlooking Devil's Kitchen, a large sinkhole that formed when an underground cavern collapsed. The hole is roughly 50 feet deep and over 100 feet across, and it is an impressive sight.

Interpretive signs explain the geology behind its formation. The red and white rock layers visible in the sinkhole walls provide a natural cross-section of Sedona's geological history. Beyond these initial attractions, the Soldier Pass Trail continues climbing through increasingly rugged terrain.

You gain elevation through a series of rocky switchbacks with expanding views of the surrounding red rock formations. The trail passes through areas of mixed desert and woodland vegetation, with juniper, pinyon pine, manzanita, and agave sharing the landscape. The upper portions of the trail offer some of the best panoramic views of Sedona's western red rock formations, including views toward Chimney Rock and Capitol Butte that are not visible from the more popular tourist viewpoints in town.

The trail eventually connects to the Brins Mesa Trail, offering the possibility of a longer loop hike for those with the time and energy. Dogs on leash are welcome on this trail. The terrain is rocky in places, so dogs with sensitive paws may need booties on the more exposed sections.

Bring water and sun protection, as the trail has sections of full sun exposure. The limited trailhead parking means this trail tends to be less crowded than Cathedral Rock or Devil's Bridge, which adds to its appeal. If you want a quieter Sedona hiking experience with diverse geological features, Soldier Pass delivers on all counts.
