About Flatiron via Siphon Draw Trail

The Flatiron is the ultimate test piece for Phoenix-area hikers. This punishing climb up the western face of the Superstition Mountains takes you to a flat-topped summit platform at 4,861 feet that offers some of the most spectacular views in southern Arizona. It is not a casual outing.

This hike demands solid fitness, scrambling ability, route-finding skills, and respect for the mountain. Rescue helicopters fly missions here regularly, and that should tell you something about the seriousness of this trail. The hike begins in Lost Dutchman State Park, where you pay a $7 vehicle fee at the entrance.

From the Siphon Draw Trailhead, the first mile follows a well-defined path through beautiful Sonoran Desert with thick saguaro forests and views of the imposing western face of the Superstitions rising ahead of you. This opening stretch is almost deceptively pleasant. At roughly the one-mile mark, you enter Siphon Draw, a rocky drainage that climbs steeply into the mountains.

This is where the trail gets serious. You scramble up the boulder-strewn wash, navigating over and around large rocks. After significant rain, a seasonal waterfall flows over a pour-off here, which is a stunning sight but also means the rock is slippery.

The pour-off area requires a short but exposed scramble up a rock face. This is the section where many hikers decide to turn around, and there is no shame in that decision. Above the pour-off, the trail becomes less defined.

You follow cairns and worn paths through a steep, rocky basin. The vegetation transitions from desert scrub to chaparral with manzanita, scrub oak, and mountain mahogany. The route-finding here is the crux for many hikers.

Multiple use paths branch off in different directions, and taking a wrong line can lead to dangerous dead ends on loose rock. If you lose the cairns, backtrack until you find them again. The final 500 feet of elevation gain to the summit involves Class 3 scrambling over large boulders and steep rock faces.

You will use your hands constantly. Some sections feel more like rock climbing than hiking. When you finally pull yourself onto the flat summit platform, the sense of accomplishment is immense.

The Flatiron's top is a surprisingly large, flat expanse of rock with views extending in every direction. Phoenix sprawls to the west, Weaver's Needle rises to the east, and the rugged interior of the Superstition Wilderness unfolds to the north. Critical safety advice: start this hike at first light.

You need every minute of daylight, especially in the shorter days of winter. Bring at least three liters of water, food, a headlamp (in case you are slower than expected), and layers for the cooler temperatures at the top. Wear shoes with aggressive grip.

Do not attempt this hike if rain is in the forecast, as the rock becomes treacherous when wet. Tell someone your plan and expected return time. This hike is not suitable for children or inexperienced hikers regardless of their fitness level.

The scrambling sections are exposed and a fall could be fatal.
