About Pass Mountain Trail

Pass Mountain Trail is a long, mellow loop that circles the entire base of Pass Mountain within Usery Mountain Regional Park. At 7.4 miles with minimal elevation change, it is the polar opposite of the intense summit hikes that dominate the Phoenix hiking scene.

This is the trail you choose when you want distance and solitude without the physical punishment of a steep climb. It is also one of the best trail running routes in the east Valley. The trail can be accessed from several points within the park, but most people start from the Wind Cave Trailhead area.

Heading clockwise, the first portion follows a wide, well-graded path through open desert. You pass through extensive saguaro forests that are genuinely impressive in their density. The saguaros here range from small, single-armed youngsters to towering multi-armed giants that have stood in this spot for 150 years or more.

As you round the southern side of the mountain, the trail enters a quieter zone that sees far less foot traffic. This backside section is where Pass Mountain reveals its wilder character. The Superstition Mountains loom to the east, and the landscape feels noticeably more remote.

You are essentially walking through the transition zone between suburban Mesa and true wilderness. Keep your eyes open for wildlife along this stretch. Mule deer are common, coyotes are frequently spotted in the early morning, and the diverse bird population includes cactus wrens, Gila woodpeckers, and the occasional Harris's hawk hunting in groups.

The eastern and northern portions of the loop offer views that most visitors to the park never see. The volcanic rock of Pass Mountain shows different faces as you circle it, from smooth tuff walls to rugged, craggy outcroppings. Several dry washes cross the trail, and after rainfall these areas can show evidence of water flow with smoothed rocks and deposited sand.

The trail surface varies between packed dirt, decomposed granite, and some rocky sections, but nothing technical. The minimal elevation gain means this is essentially a flat walk, with only gentle undulations as the path crosses washes and small ridges. Practical considerations: the $7 park entry fee applies.

Bring more water than you would for a typical easy hike because the distance adds up. Two liters per person is a good minimum. There is very little shade on the entire loop, so sun protection is essential.

Dogs are welcome on leash and will enjoy the varied smells and terrain. Mountain bikers share the trail, particularly on the eastern sections, so stay alert for approaching cyclists. This is an excellent hike for people who want a longer desert experience without the crowds of more popular trails.

On weekday mornings, you may complete the entire backside of the loop without seeing another person. Pair it with the short Wind Cave Trail for a full day of hiking in the park.
